Soraj, Afghanistan

Soraj Ghulam Habib lives in the Herat province in Afghanistan. He was born during the war and grew up in a climate of violence and conflict.

Soraj was 10 years old when he lost both his legs. “One day, I got really excited as I was going to play with my friends. Suddenly I touched an object I didn’t recognise and it claimed half of my body.”

As a member of Handicap International's Ban Advocates, Soraj now speaks out for the thousands of innocent victims, people who have suffered due to landmines, cluster bombs, and the destruction of war. “When I speak at conferences, I don’t ask for my legs back – no one can do that – but I ask to be given the chance to get my self-confidence back, as a human being, and for the means to study.”

Soraj does not want his children to face the same problems.
