What we do against cluster bombs

Handicap International helps disabled people make a positive difference to their lives. We work in many countries affected by landmines and cluster munitions. Every day our teams meet cluster bomb survivors; the ‘lucky’ ones who have not been killed outright.

We help survivors back into society through counselling, community activity, artificial limb fitting, physiotherapy, inclusive education, income generating activities and sport. We also try to prevent further accidents by carrying out bomb clearance and educating the local population about the dangers of cluster bombs and landmines.

However, our activities will have no long-term impact unless we tackle the cause of the problem. We will always provide support to survivors but our experience shows that banning these weapons is the way forward.

In simple terms, the only permanent solution is a global ban on the use, production and stockpiling of cluster munitions. To achieve this, Handicap International informs the general public on the effects of cluster bombs through events such as the Pyramid of Shoes. Our organisation also campaigns with governments that still allow the use or production of cluster bombs.
